Measure for Measure
It's Tuesday so it must be market day.
Bread is carried on palm branch racks into the souk from the bakery a few blocks away.
The racks are then set up as a display board off the back of a motorcycle that has been converted for deliveries. Called aesh it is similar to, but heavier than, Lebanese pita. Each 'loaf' costs 20 piastres (less than 4 cents). At such a price, it is a hearty staple of the Egyptian diet. You need to be quick -- and have long arms -- because the loaves go fast. Mine were almost too hot to handle. Now, that's fresh!
The sieve seller, who was featured here last week, has a creative way to give himself a little shade under the hot sun. Unfortunately, I do not have any more Tilley hats to spare.
