Crickets and Stars

I was delighted to spend a lovely Saturday evening under the stars and palm trees. At the foot of the Gourna mountain, we ate a simple meal of chicken, vegetable stew, rice, and salad at the outdoor cafe called El Nour el Gourna ("The Light of Gourna"). During the day, the area is full of hustle and bustle because the main road to the Valley of the Kings and of the Queens passes alongside; but at night only the crickets can be heard . . .

It's another world when the sun travels to the far side of the planet. The colossal statues of Amenophis III (known as "Memnon" by the Greeks) appear as night sentinels guarding the mountain. We rode our bikes down a dirt road into the darkness. Although the road petered out, we were able to follow the sugar cane railway tracks to the main road to continue our journey home.
