Howard Carter's ghost is alive and well at "Castle Carter", the house Lord Carnarvon built for Carter in 1910. We enjoyed a delightful visit of the house that is furnished with period items, including some of Carter's expedition equipment, and a chat with Carter's holographic ghost.
Lunch in Carter's Cafe, operated by the Winter Palace Hotel, was pleasurable. The frosted glasses and frigid water made the LE25 price for a bottle of water almost acceptable (it goes for LE2.50 at the grocery store) because it was such a relief from the hot temperatures. The house sits on a raise at the edge of the desert plateau, along the road that leads to the Valley of the Kings. No doubt Howard Carter's ghost shakes his head in disbelief when looking out the window at the golf-course lawn that now surrounds the house.
More details soon, on an upcoming Travel Tuesday post. Stay tuned.
