Environmental Extremes

By 6:30 am, a fellow worked in the former sugarcane field to irrigate (read 'flood') the newly planted banana plants. Such an idyllic scene in the quiet of the morning.

Later, at the entrance to a village market, we walked past the local recycler. Every shape and size of metal stood at the side of the road while an old carriage (known as a caleche) seemed to slid into a watery oblivion of the canal. There are times that I feel like I'm living in the wild west, and this scene seemed to confirm that sentiment. Nevertheless, we all had a good time in the vegetable market -- the Wednesday alternative to Gurna's Tuesday market.
