Canada on the Nile

The Canadian flag now flies proudly on the Hatshepsut boat. Since the embassy in Cairo does not stock flags, it took a year to get the homeland represented among the united nations that waft in the sweet Nile breezes.

Two Canadians wandered empty temples as I shared some of my favourite places with a new friend who found herself travelling in difficult times. Warm greetings welcomed us to Egypt as we travelled in local microbuses, wandered country roads and found interesting treasure houses of lovely things to buy. It never fails that I see something new during each outing so I very much enjoy opportunities to re-visit familiar places.

The weather is warming and the Bee Eaters have arrived on their northward migration. Several flitted about the Ramesseum. Their beauty is enhanced when they fly with outstretched wings of orange.

Between visits to the Ramesseum and Medinat Habu, we enjoyed a very civilized lunch in the garden oasis of the Nour el Gourna restaurant. For less than $10 each, we dined leisurely on duck, rice, baked beans, tasty vegetables, fried potatoes, and tahina. An hour and a half later, we were well fortified to continue the journey. We did manage to see all of Ramses III's mortuary temple, although we were escorted out by friendly security men armed with machine guns as closing time approached.

Our day together ended with the Hatshepsut transporting us along golden waters and a final cappucino as we planned tomorrow's program. Such a lovely day in beautiful Egypt.
