A Sign of Summer

Regarding the strawberry:
"Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did."
Dr. William Butler, English writer, 17th century

Finally! We have the semblance of summer and a colleague offered delicious evidence: the first local strawberry to arrive in the grocery store. Its sweetness has not been diluted by all the recent rains. Ah, there is much to look forward to.

  1. We tried growing strawberries on our allotment some years ago. It wasn’t too successful as there seemed to be something trying to harvest them before we had a chance…
We found a number of part eaten berries gathered together in several ‘caches’ around the allotment. Closer inspection revealed that the surface of the fruit had been stripped of the seeds but not much fruit had been eaten.
The culprits turned out to be mice - it seem they LOVE the seeds but aren’t too keen on the fruit !!
